HSHC Contributes bicycles |
|
On 1st October, 2009, many a farmers’ dreams came true as HSHC embarked on the distribution of bicycles in Naromoru. It was a welcome boost to many of them who for many years have had to carry out their activities with the inconvenience of not having reliable transport. The Kieni East District Commissioner, Mr. Daniel Odambu, graced the occasion. He was assisted by Paul Maina and Charles Kahunja, staff of HSHC. One of the farmers, Jane Wanjiru Nderitu, a farmer from NaroMoru, collects cape chestnut seeds from the forest and delivers them to the collection centre which is 3km away. Previously she would hire bicycle transport to deliver the seeds which ate into her profits. With the newly acquired bicycle, she will now be able to deliver the seeds herself and earn a higher return than before. She will now be able to access extension services due to the available means of transport. Besides farmers, traders also benefited from this distribution. They will be able to transport agricultural produce to the market and also use the bicycles as a form of taxi. The bicycles were generously donated by MIVA Switzerland.
